Prerequisites for a Bright and Successful Electrical Career

A career in the electrical industry can be an exciting one if you have the aptitude and skills for it. It is a challenging profile that requires a sense of responsibility, commitment and a keen interest to work for the public. In order to succeed as an electrician, you need to have a good understanding of designing and installing electrical equipment.

Requirements for an Electrical Career

A formal education in the electrical field can help you start your career with ease. But irrespective of whether or not you have the theoretical knowledge, an apprenticeship programme is sure to help. In fact, most electricians first step into their careers with apprenticeship training.

Such training includes classroom-based programmes where you get hands-on training on how to design and install electrical systems or operate them for proper functioning. To enrol for such training, you should be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma.

Most apprenticeship programmes include up to 600 hours of classroom training on electrical circuits and their safety. This is followed by on-the-job guidance by expert electricians.

An important training programme for an electrical career is the PAT (Portable appliance testing) course. Here’s how it can benefit you.

Advantages of PAT Training…

This course is specially meant for those willing to pursue a career in electrical appliance testing. PAT test courses will educate you on how to find out if it is safe to use an electrical device. You will learn how to follow the manufacturer’s instruction manual and operate electrical equipment so that it functions properly.

Once you enrol in a PAT course, you will know how to use testers so as to examine an electrical device and evaluate the risk associated with it. The course will help you understand how to operate appliances so that you can avert electrical shock and other accidents.

The best thing about PAT training is that it offers a certification of technical expertise in the field of electrical testing. This certification helps you start a career in the electrical industry.

PAT makes you learn the electrical principles behind the working of a portable appliance. It also provides knowledge of the legal issues that you must be aware of in order to work in electrical equipment testing. So, a PAT certified electrician is likely to be favoured over others looking for electrical jobs.

Licensing Requirements for Electricians

You will have to acquire a license from your state for an electrical career. The state will require you to qualify through a test on electrical applications.

If you want to start your business, your state will need you to complete a bachelor’s degree course in electrical engineering before you apply for a license. Once you pass the qualifying test successfully, you will receive a contractor’s license from your state. You can then start your business as an electrician.
