DIY Personal Finance Organization Tips for the Newbie

After spending years of your life in financial disarray, you've finally decided that it's time to get these matters in order. You want to manage your personal finances, but you are not quite sure how to achieve that goal. Follow these tips to be successful without having to call in the help of a professional.

Creating a Budget

The power of Microsoft Excel is phenomenal, and you have the opportunity to make a budget that works for your lifestyle. Make a list of all of your monthly expenses. Include lines for personal spending and savings once you have figured out what is left at the end of the month. After that, create columns for the current month you're up to. Once a bill has been paid, or the amount has been placed in your checking account for automatic withdrawal, you can make a note that it is done for the month.

Making File Cabinets

Not all of your financial happenings need to appear on the computer, and you can make a physical representation of your financial affairs, as well. Start a file cabinet in your home office or bedroom, and you can assign one drawer to different materials. For example, one drawer could have old tax returns that you need, and another one can contain all of your receipts for charitable donations this year.

A Coupon Envelope

How many times have you received a ticket, stored it away somewhere and then had no idea where it was when you needed it? Instead of going through the process over and over again, create an envelope in which you'll keep all of your coupons. You can even have separate envelopes for different types of coupons. To make the planning practice a little bit fun, decorate the envelopes to explain what types of coupons they contain. You should dedicate a file cabinet drawer to these envelopes.

Sticky Note Boards

Automatic withdrawals are an excellent way to pay your bills, but they are not for everyone. Hang up a panel of sticky notes in your kitchen or another room that you frequent. On these notes, you can post reminders to yourself of when bills need to be paid so that you don't forget. Plenty of different designs and models are available, so you are able to choose one that pleases the eye.

Personal finance organization doesn't have to be a snore and fatigue. Use these tips to incorporate a little bit of creativity into the process.
