Enlist the help of a coach

Asking for help from a professional or someone you trust is always a splendid idea.  There are agencies and individuals whose sole job is to develop resumes for others, and they will work with you on building your resume and making it more marketable.  You can also enlist the help of a trusted expert in your area of employment.  By choosing someone who works in your field, you are ensuring that they know and understand what the employers in your line of work are looking for.  While utilizing a coach is of huge help, it is essential that you do not allow the coach to write your resume for you.  Potential employers might be able to recognize when a coach has written your resume, and this could lead to them dismissing you as a future employee by assuming that you are not motivated or capable to write your own resume.

Sell your skill set

We all dread hearing the question “What are your biggest strengths?” In an interview, right?  This is often the most difficult question to answer because we just aren’t accustomed to bragging on ourselves or considering what we are skilled at.  But when building a resume, it is necessary to take some time to think about what your biggest skills, assets, and accomplishments are.  Potential employers want to know why they should hire you and why you think you would be an asset to their company.  Your resume tells them this information and allows them to decide whether or not to give you an interview.  Remember to include any awards or noteworthy recognitions or accomplishments that are related to the job you are applying for.  Remember, this is your chance to win a lasting first impression, so it’s okay to brag a little!

Cater your resume to the specific job you are applying for

You may have several years of work experience behind you, but chances are it does not all apply to the position you are applying for.  It is important to take the time to cater your resume to the specific job you are applying for.  This might take some extra time and effort, but the result will be worth it.  The person reading your resume will typically spend no more than a few minutes reviewing your resume, so be sure to keep the content relevant and succinct.

Make your resume visually appealing

There is often a great deal of text in your resume, which can make for a terribly crowded and difficult to read piece of paper.  It is essential to make your resume visually appealing, so as to break up the words.  A great way to do this is to add bullets onto your resume.  Bullets can be an excellent way to break up words, and can be used to help categorize your skills or tasks on your experience section of your resume.
