Each state in the Union is responsible for
enacting and enforcing its own laws regarding car insurance requirements. Most
states have somewhat similar requirements, but most differ in terms of the
specific amounts of bodily injury and property damage protection that must be
carried. For instance, if you are a licensed driver in the state of
Pennsylvania, then you must bring proof of insurance in your vehicle at all
times.
However, Pennsylvania differs from most states in the sense that it is
classified as a "no-fault" state, which means that the state does not
determine who is at fault in the event of an accident.
As a result, all licensed drivers in Pennsylvania
have to carry a specific amount of liability insurance, in addition to what is
known, as medical benefits-coverage, or no-fault coverage. This type of
coverage is meant to cover medical bills in the event of an accident. With
no-fault insurance, however, you often waive your right to sue for medical
expenses in the event of an accident that results in injury. This is a policy
implemented by the state in an effort to reduce the number of lawsuits brought
on by car accidents.
When it comes to liability coverage, all
drivers should have bodily injury protection in the amount of at least $15,000
per person and $30,000 per accident. Property damage must be covered in the
amount of at least $5,000 per accident. These amounts, however, are not terribly
expensive and are generally not enough. Therefore, drivers who want to avoid
the possibility of owing more than the insurance can cover should purchase more
than the state minimum amounts. This is especially true of those who
have cars that are leased or otherwise financed and therefore will need to
have extensive and collision insurance as well as higher liability amounts.
Once you have purchased your six-month
insurance premium, you will receive a certificate of insurance. One copy of
this is to stay in your car and must be shown to a police officer in the event
of a traffic stop. Failure to do so can result in fines and penalties. If you are looking to buy car insurance in Philadelphia, and are looking for the policy that is right for you, consider contacting a Philadelphia insurance agency to request a free quote.
